Division 3: 2nd Suzanna D'Costa

Stratford Scrabble Club Springtime Newsletter
This is actually our 30th year since starting the club in late 1996 and spring is almost upon us.
We have been in continuous operation apart from a 3 year hiatus during covid. Thanks to suggestions by Henry de Young, we went on facebook as well as having a weekly notice in the Stratford Times, and the result was an influx of new folk.
This has meant that the silent intensity of play between experts has been replaced by the happy sounds of people having fun, regardless of the outcome of a game. Some long time records have been broken such as the highest scoring game without a bingo . Madeleine Conrad's record of the highest scoring single word (230 for QUIVER?D) has yet to be bettered.
New blood has also meant that weaker players do not always lose games.
So we hope that you will drop in and see us again. We have weekly prizes for the highest scoring bingo of a certain letter, as well as prizes for improving your best score, as well as a couple of word prizes. There is even a prize for bingoes of more than 8 letters.
For years our website was skillfully managed by Milton van der Veen at considerable financial cost to himself. He also did our weekly stats, but last year he asked us to find someone to take over the website because of some health issues he had. A new player Myles Schulz, agreed to take on this task. (the website is still stratfordscrabble.ca) This means that now the Stratford Scrabble Club is bearing the full cost of the website. The best deal we could make cost $230 for the next 3 years. To get this cost savings we have paid $171 up front. This bill has been paid by John Dungey, but we do not have the money to reimburse him. We are convinced that the website is valuable as a means of communication, and to attract new people to the club.
On the basis of the above information we needed to raise our weekly dues. This was explained to the folk present at the club on 4 March 2026 and a vote was taken. Dues will increase to $2/night effective 11 March 2026. If we ever have a surplus we can promise you that we will plough it back into the club by increasing the prize money.
Congratulations are due to Myles Schultz who has just won his 50th game at the club. Carol Stevens is close behind with 48.5 (48 wins and one draw).
The only item missing is you, so, in the words of the musical the Festival is putting on this year "Come to the fold and stray no more". We look forward to seeing you back, even if it is just occasionally. The weather is bound to improve. Perhaps you should think about joining NASPA and taking part in our 24th annual tourney on Sept 26. Lynette is gungho and already thinking of preparing coffee and muffins for this event.

You might want to try to play Wordle, invented by Josh Wardle, a word lover in Brooklyn, New York.

Wordle is a guessing game that gives a person six chances to guess the day’s secret five-letter word. Type in a word as a guess, and the game tells you which letters are or aren’t in the word. The game is free and has no ads yet. You can only play once a day and send your results to friends.

The creator of Wordle, software engineer Josh Wardle, said in an interview in January that he had been approached about turning the game into an app but had no plans to do so; however, he sold it to the New York Times in February and it is now on their website.

Results from Embro Scrabble Tourney
July, 2013

The revival of the unrated tourney at Embro (this time) was a great success.
Matt Schlegel's parents hosted the event in their home. The event consisted of 4 games played in two divisions - 6 players took part in the non timer division which was won by Anna Wodtka, a former Stratford player now living in Kitchener, and the 4 player timer division was won by Terry Aitken.
After the games we all enjoyed a barbecue supper which consisted of hamburgers, salad and the most scrumptious peach pie imaginable.
Matt's niece Hannah and nephew Connor, did a great job dealing with the challenges.

Scrabble with Stars
May, 2012

Henry de Young and Terry Aitken were given tickets for this event by a friend who worked for Scotiabank which organised the event, which was a charitable one to raise money for PAL (Performing Arts Lodge).
We went along with some trepidation because of the possibility of meeting some famous person from the world of film, radio, and TV and this did happen, but, as I said to one such person in the buffet queue, I had just resolved to treat people as people.
I did speak to Tom Harrington of Marketplace in the elevator, and tried to speak to Colin Mochrie (at the instigation of my daughter) but the latter was surrounded by a bevy of adoring females, so I got nowhere.
There was a silent auction where celebrities had submitted pictures they had painted, or built a birdhouse, or even just tied a set of flies. There was also a 50:50 draw, and you could buy an arm's length of tickets for $20.
We landed up sitting at tables for 4. At our table there were 3 regular Scrabble players, and one star, Nil Koksal, the CBC anchor for Saturday night. She proved to be a very pleasant and gracious person.
Bids could also be placed for top Scrabble players to help at your table! Bids for the top lady Scrabble player in North America, who lives in Toronto, reached $1000. Bids for the top male player, a former world champion from Montreal, reached $1200.
A buffet meal was served, and many Scrabble players from Toronto acted as volunteers, including John Chew, who ran the tourney. Each table just had one game.
With a blank in each of my first two turns, I was able to bingo (play all my tiles) both times, and won the game with 270 points. The top win was only 301, and the top win by a star was 269 ( the star also happened to be a good Scrabble player.)
There were generous prizes for these two categories, as well for the table with the highest combined total. I think that was 900 something, and likely because one of the experts, for whom they had bid successfully, had helped. Anyway it was a lot of fun, and a good way to raise money. Volunteers were also selling cheat sheets for $5 each. I offered to buy one for Nil, but she preferred to be sporting, and go it on her own.
